Emotional well-being as a youth-preserving tool
Emotional well-being improves overall quality of life by promoting physical health and increasing resilience, which is crucial for navigating the different challenges and changes that come with aging. It helps the seniors to adapt to new circumstances without getting stressed and maintain a sense of purpose. So, we should stay socially connected to reduce loneliness and isolation as we age. A sense of belonging to a community is important, so we should stay connected with family and friends. Find groups that align with your interests and learn new skills to keep your mind sharp. Also, teach your skills to the younger generation. Visit a nearby park, explore your neighbourhood. You can also volunteer at local organizations such as animal shelters, libraries, hospitals, etc. Find time to indulge in activities that you enjoy, such as reading books, playing less intense sports and brain games such as chess, sudoku, jigsaw or crossword puzzles, word games, etc. Cultivate hobbies like art, gardening to maintain motor skills. Engage in regular exercise to improve flexibility and muscle toning. Keep having new goals and purposes in life. Practice yoga, meditation and breathing techniques that help to relax the mind and manage stress. Appreciate small joys and positive things in your life. These help to foster happiness and mental well-being, thus improving the quality of life in old age.
On the other hand, poor emotional well-being increases the risk of depression and anxiety, leads to a decline in cognitive function, decreases motivation and makes the person feel a reduced sense of purpose and happiness and feel socially isolated and lonely.
Ayurvedic herbs for mental rejuvenation: Brahmi, Ashwagandha
To improve and maintain cognitive function and reduce stress, we should start taking Brahmi and Ashwagandha herbs after the age of 40. Brahmi is a brain tonic that improves memory and focus, whereas Ashwagandha is a powerful adaptogen that helps improve physical strength and resilience to stress. Ashwagandha and Brahmi are two herbs that offer physical and mental wellness and strength as we grow older. They give a synergistic effect when taken together. The neuroprotective properties and antioxidant effects of both herbs help protect against cellular damage and cognitive decline. Brahmi helps reduce stress and improve cognitive performance, and Ashwagandha improves sleep quality and energy; thus, in combination, they can enhance mental resilience. These herbs balance serotonin and dopamine and lower cortisol levels, thus reducing brain fog and fatigue. They also improve emotional stability, produce a sense of calm and support learning, focus and memory recall. These two herbs have a revitalizing effect on the body and mind.
Daily gratitude and positive relationships as anti-aging medicine
Research studies show that seniors with higher gratitude had better cognitive abilities and enhanced memory, reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety. Keep a gratitude journal and write down at least 5 things that you are grateful for every day, write a letter of gratitude to a friend or appreciate someone once a month, meet a family member or friend at least once a week, help one person a day and appreciate your surroundings daily to focus on positive aspects of life. Social connections and positive relationships improve longevity, immune function, digestion and metabolism, functioning of all organ systems and cognitive function.
Partner’s positive emotions and supportive family or friends help us to manage stress effectively, thus reducing inflammation and slowing down degeneration in the body. Also, healthy relationships can have a positive influence on our lifestyle habits, such as adopting regular exercise, working out together with a partner or a friend and help us avoid unhealthy habits such as smoking. Feeling loved makes us have a sense of commitment/purpose towards our own health and helps us cope with life’s challenges.
