Ayurveda believes that we ingest toxins on daily basis through food, water, air or our day-to-day mental and emotional activities. The toxicity level in the body is further intensified by unhealthy lifestyle, stressful relationships and lack of spiritual orientation.
All these factors lead to the formation of ‘Ama’ in the body that can be classified into toxins, undigested food products and blemishes, which further can cause various ailments related to stomach, kidney, intestine, etc. This Ama is removed from the body with the help of an effective Ayurvedic treatment known as Panchakarma.
What Is Panchakarma?
Panchakarma is a unique set of procedures that is used to cleanse and rejuvenate the body by clearing out all the toxins from body, mind and consciousness.
It is a personalized form of detoxification combining five procedures of purification and thus is named panchakarma. It is especially formulated to heal the body, detoxify it and restore its natural balance. Removing toxins from the body tissues opens the body channels, brings about energy in the body and increases inner peace, vitality and confidence. This procedure simply aims at the overall well-being of the person.
Why Panchkarma?
Lifestyle changes, lack of sleep, chronic fatigue, improper diet and bad food habits can lead to weakening of the digestive fire or ‘Agni’. Other factors that lead to the weakening of Agni and accumulation of Ama are emotional distress, fear, anxiety and anger.
When the Agni is weak, the body becomes unable to digest and metabolize food, emotions and experiences. As a result, the physical and emotional Ama built up in the body blocks the flow of energy causing several ailments. Panchkarma, thus, is a natural, holistic and unique therapeutic treatment that cleanses the toxins from the deep body tissues and increases vitality, inner peace and confidence.
Panchakarma Process
The process starts with inquiring about the individual’s health and lifestyle to understand his vulnerability to diseases. Based on this information, a proper therapy plan is conceptualized including pre-therapy supplements, diet, exercises and other activities.
There are five therapies of Panchakarma used for cleaning and rejuvenation of body: Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya, Rakta Moksan. However, it is not necessary that all the therapies are used on one individual. The therapies can be tailored according to the doshic imbalances of the individual. So let us get familiar with these therapies in detail below:
- Vamana (Emesis) - It is a form of therapeutic vomiting that is used to clean excess Kapha from the body. This can be in the form of mucous or repressed emotions in the stomach and lungs. It can relieve conditions like chronic asthma, cold, diabetes, indigestion and lymphatic congestion and edema.
- Virechana (Purgation) - This purgation therapy is effective against excess Pitta with the use of therapeutic laxatives. The excess of Pitta can accumulate in the form of bile in gall bladder, liver and small intestines. It is beneficial against skin rashes, nausea, chronic digestive disorder and inflammation associated with bile.
- Basti (Enema) - It is a form of herbal enema that is used to treat the Vata dosha in colon. Nutritive oils like sesame oil, calamus oil as well as other herbal brews in a liquid form are inserted into the rectum. It can be beneficial in relieving conditions such as distension, constipation, kidney stones, heart pain, backache, sciatica, sexual disorders and pain or stiffness in joints. Besides, it is also used to treat arthritis, muscles spasms, gout and headaches.
- Nasya (Medication Nasal Intake) - In this therapy, the body is removed of toxins through nose using nutritive nasya oils. As the nose directly leads to the brain, eliminating the built up in the nose, sinus cavity and throat can reconcile prana (life force). Usually, a disturbed prana can result in defective mental capacity such as memory loss and lack of concentration. It can also help treat headaches, sinus congestion, reduced sensory perception, convulsions, sinus congestion, and other eye and ear disorders.
- Rakta Moksa (Blood Letting) - Blood absorbs the toxins building up in the gastrointestinal tract and transfers it throughout the body. This can lead to skin and liver disorders like rash, acne, eczema, scabies, spleen, etc., and can be treated using Rakta Moksa therapy. All the antitoxic substances present in the blood stream are stimulated through this and blood’s immune mechanism is strengthened. Rakta Mokshan Therapy is not offered by Pure Herbal Ayurved Clinic.
