Say Goodbye to Acne: Ayurveda's Remedial Herbs for Clear Skin

We all wish for beautiful, glowing and healthy skin. It serves a cosmetic purpose and boosts our emotional health and self-confidence.

Sometimes Acne, blemishes and scars can make us feel disappointed and unhappy. Acne is a stubborn health condition that may be hard to treat. They usually appear on the face, neck, shoulders, chest and back.

Natural Herbal Acne Treatment

Herbs that prevent bacterial growth, reduce inflammation, and remove blockage of hair follicles may be beneficial in treating Acne.

Following Ayurvedic Herbs have been used traditionally for centuries to manage skin conditions like Acne:

Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia)

Manjistha has been used for gout, eczema, psoriasis and pimples. It may help to purify the blood and removes the ama unwanted waste products from the body. Accumulation of various waste products in the body causes functional abnormalities, which may also cause fluctuation of hormones. In Acne, manjistha helps to detoxify the blood and skin. It may further help to control the excess oil production from sebaceous glands and stop bacterial growth due to its anti-bacterial actions.

As per the research done by Shinde Kalyani Ramchandra et al., a mixture of varna dravyas (Varnya dravya are those which are useful for imparting complexion ) used in the form of external application can be beneficial for the treatment of Acne when used simultaneously with internal administration of the drugs. A leap of Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia) powder with honey proves very helpful.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa)

Turmeric has anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties. Due to these characteristics, turmeric may help to stop the growth of bacteria in clogged hair follicles and reduces inflammation of hair follicles. Curcumin is a natural compound present in turmeric that is responsible for all its beneficial properties. Moreover, turmeric also helps to get rid of blockages of hair follicles, so it may also prevent the recurrence of Acne.

Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra)

Licorice has anti-inflammatory properties and is used in many health conditions, including acidity, ulcer, skin diseases, mental disorders, etc. In Acne, it may act to reduce inflammatory lesion and controls sebum production by stabilizing hormonal fluctuations. These actions may be due to the liquorice's triterpene glycosides and glycyrrhizic acid alkaloids.

Neem (Azadirachta indica)

Neem (for topical use only) has anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties, which may help treat Acne. It may also help to purify the blood and remove the ama, i.e., unwanted waste products from it, which helps to better the skin health. Neem is an anti-toxic herb that enhances immunity against bacterial growth and prevents secondary infections of hair follicles. It may reduce the redness and tenderness of the pimples.

Giloy (Tinospora Cordifolia)

Giloy is known for its immunomodulator action and anti-inflammatory properties. It lets the body fights against infections so that it may benefit Acne. Due to its natural properties to reduce inflammation, it may be helpful in inflammatory lesions of Acne.

Triphala (Three Myrobalan)

Triphala combines fruits from Terminalia chebula, Emblica officinalis and Terminalia bellerica. Triphala has the properties of healing and expelling the body's toxins. Ayurveda believes that the root cause of most Acne is the accumulation of amatoxins and constipation. So, Triphala helps to manage constipation, cleanses the digestive system, and removes toxins from the body.
