Detoxifying Your Body With Ayurveda Herbs

Ayurveda is an ancient holistic system of medicine and natural healing which originated in ancient India. It is among the oldest known forms of healthcare system in the world that aims at revitalizing the body through natural herbs and medications.

Ayurveda, as most people believe is not just about treating diseases, on the contrary, it is about maintaining mental, physical and spiritual health. Ayurveda says that from the food that we eat, to the air we breathe, to the fragrance that we enjoy, to the good sight, etc., everything that affects the human body has a potential medicinal value.

Understanding The Doshas

According to Ayurveda, diseases can occur when there is an imbalance in the Doshas. The three fundamental bodily doshas are known as:

  • Vata: People with dominant vata dosha are energetic generous & spiritual minded. Any imbalance causes problems like restlessness, stress, gout, rheumatism, etc.
  • Pitta: People with predominant constitution tend to be intellectual, have an insatiable appetite, and have a muscular build. When this Dosha gets out of balance, people are prone to high blood pressure, eczema, acne, depression, etc.
  • Kapha: People with Kapha as the dominant Dosha tend to have a thick build & gain weight easily. They are also prone to skin problems like oily skin, acne, etc.

Thus, Ayurveda treatment is a method of restoring balance in the human body humour through proper application of medicine by drinking, eating and application by massaging.

Classification of Herbs Used In Ayurveda Medicine

The herbs used in Ayurveda are classified according to their taste (rasa), energy (virya), post digestive effect (Vipaka) and post-digestive effect (prabhava). The initial taste indicates the properties that these herbs possess and the therapeutic effect they have on the body. What this means is that, a bitter taste will have a different action on the body than sweet, sour, spicy or pungent taste.

  • Astringent: Astringent Herbs are drying and moisture preserving and have a contracting condensing effect on a tissue. These herbs can be classified as hemostatic (stops bleeding), anti-diarrhea and vulnerary (healing wound).
