Kumaryasava or Kumarayasavam

Kumaryasavam is Ayurvedic health tonic prepared with technique of fermentation. It is mainly used in treating women’s problems as well as abdominal and liver problems. It has also been traditionally prescribed in productive cough, asthma, non-bleeding piles or haemorrhoids, abdominal pain and loss of appetite.

Ingredients of Kumaryasavam

The main ingredient in Kumaryasavam is aloe vera. It possesses major quality of aloe vera. Other important ingredients are Woodfordia fructicosa, Nardostachys jatamansi, Inula racemosa, Ricinus communis, Piper retrofractum, Pistacia integerrima etc.

Ayurveda Pharmacological action of Kumariasava

Kumaryasavam balances vata and kapha humour as per Ayurvedic science. In abdominal pain, it works as anti-spasmodic as well as has anti-inflammatory action due to presence of Ricinus communis and aloe vera. Due to anti-spasmodic action, it is also beneficial in spasmodic dysmenorrhoea (painful periods). Furthermore, Kumaryasavam is also useful in cases of amenorrhoea or absent menses. It is considered to stimulate ovaries to produce eggs and assists to maintain natural menstrual cycle.

It works on liver due to its stimulant action on bile production. It may help to increase secretion of bile and aids in fat digestions. Moreover, bile stimulates intestinal peristaltic movements that help to resolve chronic constipation as well.

Kumaryasavam has one important ingredient Inula racemosa that can help promote dilatation of bronchi and decrease mucous over-production in respiratory tract. Therefore, Kumaryasavam can also be beneficial in cough and asthma.

Kumaryasavam is also considered a digestive stimulant. It increases digestives juices so it is also beneficial in loss of appetite and indigestion. As said above, it works on liver as well. It reduces inflammation of liver and gall bladder.  It decreases bilirubin level in blood by which it becomes beneficial in jaundice.

Side effects of Kumaryasavam

Kumaryasavam is generally well tolerable in medicinal doses. However, it is not recommended to take without consulting Ayurveda practitioner. Ayurvedic medicine and treatment are generally considered to be safe but rarely may be associated with possible adverse reactions in individual cases.
