Understanding Ayurvedic Treatment: A Holistic Approach to Health and Wellness

Ayurveda identifies three basic energies and principles in everyone. The five basic elements, air, water, earth, space, and fire, are integrated into the physical bodies in three Doshas. Hence, every person has a unique combination of Doshas known as the Vata, Pitta and Kapha. These three Doshas work as energies helping the body's functioning, creating movement of nutrients and other fluids through the cells. These energies are not only required for the metabolism of nutrients in the cell but also for maintaining and lubricating the cell structure.

The Vata is the energy of the movement, Pitta is the energy of the metabolism or digestion, and Kapha is the energy required for structuring and lubrication. These energies are present in all humans in some constitution. One of the energies is predominant in each constitution, while the other two are least prominent. In the Ayurvedic phenomena, all the problems and diseases result from the excess of the three Doshas.

Know the Dosha and the Ayurvedic Treatment

  • Vata – It is composed of two elements: ether and air. The balanced Vata promotes a balanced mind and flexibility in the body and mind. It governs the body's functions like breathing, muscle and tissue movement, blinking, cell membrane activity and cytoplast activity, heart pulsation, etc. The outbalance of the Vata creates fearfulness, nervousness, and anxiety.
  • Pitta- Pitta is composed of water and fire elements and is mostly associated with the digestive metabolism system and body temperature. It governs bodily functions such as digestion, nutrition, assimilation, absorption, metabolism, and temperature. The balance of the Pitta contributes to intelligence, understanding, and leadership. The outbalance of the Pitta results in anger, jealousy, and hatred.
  • Kapha- It is the third Dosha composed of earth and water. It is associated with the building of the bodily tissues and stored substances. It involves bones, tendons, and muscles and holds the cell together. It supplies water to all the body parts, lubricates joints, maintains immunity and moisturizes skin. Balanced Kapha is love, calmness, and forgiveness. On the other hand, the out-of-balance Kapha is associated with attachment, congestion, and greed.

Ayurvedic Treatment

The Ayurvedic Treatments aim to keep the three Doshas in balance, as it perceives that all the problems, physical and mental, result from it only. The Ayurvedic practitioner carefully evaluates all the disease symptoms concerning the Dosha imbalance. The first step is to assess the patient's suitability for various treatments considering the Dosha imbalance. The first step is direct questioning, observation, and examination. In this, the diet and the lifestyle of the patient are asked.

The basic techniques through which the patient is observed are examining the tongue, physical features, eyes, and pulse. The weight, appearance, teeth, and skin are also checked for analyzing the problem. Lastly, other examination measures, such as stool, blood pressure, urine, speech, voice, and other tests, are performed on the patient. The treatment starts accordingly once the basic observation ends and the problem is found. The Ayurveda treatment includes herbal oil massage, detoxification, and prescription of herbal medicines and drugs.
