Disease Management in Ayurveda

There are 4 main categories of disease treatments in Ayurveda. They are cleansing(shodan), palliation(shaman),

rejuvenation (rasayana) and mental health (satvajaya).


These treatments include the use of herbal therapies, physical exercise and dietary regimens, Life style regimens, meditation,

and the use of certain yoga practices.

Panchakarna purification therapy, a wellknown Ayurvedic cleansing treatment, may include vomiting, purgation, use of medicinal

enemas, or administration of certain substances such as  oil, milk and herbal extracts through nasal passages.

Common treatment strategies in Ayurveda:

Cleansing methods (Shodan): The purpose of these methods is to remove excess toxins from the body. The main method is

 Panchakarma, which has the following 5 components. Examples are mentioned for each of the components.

1. Therapeutic vomiting (vaman): Vomiting is induced by the use of natural herbal emetic plants such as licorice.
2.  Purgation (virechan): Natural prepration are administered to help eliminate toxin via purging.
3. Medicated enema (basti). herb infused Sesame oil or herbal dedoction are often used for this method.
4. Nasal administration or instillation (nasya). Oils drops or certain herb are used with nasal massages.

Palliation (Shaman): This is done by use of herbs such as ginger, cinnamon, and black pepper and practices such as:
  1. Fasting
  2. Observing thirst
  3. Exercise yoga stretching and breathing exercises (pranayama).
  4. Lying in the sun
Rejuvenation (Rasayana): Rasayanas are ayurvedic preparations used to revitalize the tissues, promote longevity and memory and help in rejuvenation.
